Christopher Minkley - Ullswater, The Lake District, 1995
Who would have thought on that November day in 1955 when over seventy boys gathered at Hallsteads on the shores of Lake Ullswater that this month would see the sixtieth anniversary of the first schoolboys to be initiated into an Outward Bound course?
We were told at the outset that all the standards were to be kept to those set for apprentices so that immediately set our resolves to prove ourselves and we must have done ourselves proud as all the boys achieved the goal of the lapel badge in the end, myself and another boy getting the sports white outer along with the blue centre lapel badge. Each day brought a new challenge and I could never have chosen which the most exciting moment was.
