Announcing the Launch of our New Outdoor Instructor Development Scheme!
About the scheme
We are excited to unveil our Outdoor Instructor Development Scheme, designed to empower aspiring instructors with the skills, experience, and qualifications needed to become an instructor at Outward Bound.
Whether you’ve not long started your career in the outdoors or looking to take the next step in your outdoor leadership journey, this scheme offers a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and develop in a supportive, hands-on environment and get a permanent job as an instructor at Outward Bound on successful completion of the scheme.
Closing date: Wednesday, 11 December 2024.
Interviews: Wednesday, 15 and Thursday, 16 January 2025.
Start date: Tuesday, 25 February 2025

Outward Bound courses guide young people out of their comfort zones, whether it’s climbing a rock wall, navigating through the wilderness, or leading a group journeying on the rivers and lakes. The Package
- Starting salary £19,968, for a 32-hour week (FTE £24,960 40 hours), plus benefits package
- 12 month fixed term contract for the duration of the Instructor Development Scheme. Successfully complete our training scheme and get a guaranteed permanent, full time contract as an instructor
- Good quality kit, including Berghaus uniform
- 24 days paid holiday a year, plus bank holidays

- Initially based at Aberdovey with the opportunity to move within The Trust
- Progression to instructor and then senior instructor.
What you'll need to apply...
We're looking for people who are working towards two of the three NGB qualifications below:
- Summer Mountain Leader
- Rock Climbing Instructor
- BC Paddlesport Leader; or Paddlesport Instructor, plus Canoe award; or equivalent previously recognised awards.
Plus, you will need to have at least six months’ experience of working with young people, and of working unsupervised and being accountable for the safety of a group of young people
You will have a passion for working with and developing young people, and have had your own personal experiences of outdoor adventure.
We’d also like you to have a valid First Aid certificate and a full driving licence.
To complete the training scheme and become an Outward Bound Instructor within 6 - 12 months you’ll need to have passed (as a minimum) at least two of these NGB qualification assessments, have completed training in the other from the above list, and have gained sufficient appropriate group experience.
Who is this for...
It's for aspiring, dedicated, energetic and enthusiastic outdoor professionals who are ready to work and keen to develop their career in outdoor education. Successful applicants will need to have a passion for both the development of young people and having adventures in the outdoors.
Building on your theoretical knowledge you will progress quickly through the trainee scheme, first qualifying as an Outward Bound instructor and ultimately moving into a senior instructor role. Scheme participants are expected to achieve the position of instructor within 12 months of starting.
There will be lots of support and challenge along the way - our instructor development scheme includes a mix of on and off the job training, with a focus of applying knowledge and developing both your interpersonal skills and technical outdoor skills. You will be supported to achieve NGB awards for activities on the mountains and water.
You will be working in a small group of like minded individuals so there will be plenty of opportunities for adventures and plenty of fun.
You will report to a Learning and Adventure Manager at our Aberdovey centre, but as part of your training will work alongside all of the instructors and staff team at Outward Bound. The pace will be fast and intense, and we will expect/support you to embrace the challenge.
